After nearly 20 years of planning, a long-delayed industrial museum in a shuttered Pennsylvania steel plant has finally blown the factory whistle and opened the punch clock for visitors. As a showcase of American industrial might, the National Museum of Industrial History opened in Bethlehem this week. It is housed in a century-old building at the former Bethlehem Steel plant. The plant made the skeleton of Rockefeller Plaza, beams for the Golden Gate Bridge and armor plate for countless warships. In 1995, Bethlehem Steel's massive blast furnaces on the banks of the Lehigh River went cold. The plant had produced steel for about 140 years. In addition to the Smithsonian Institution-affiliated museum, it now hosts the Sands Casino Resort and a thriving arts complex called SteelStack. http://...
The closure of local hospital has set back the efforts to revive Braddock, Penn., once an industrial boom town.
After nearly 20 years of planning, the National Museum of Industrial History opened in Bethlehem Pennsylvania this week. The long-delayed industrial museum, housed in the century-old former Bethlehem Steel plant, was finally opened for visitors wishing to experience the showcase of American industrial might. After about 140 years of metal production, the plant's blast furnaces went cold in 1995. Located on the banks of the Lehigh River, Bethlehem was responsible for manufacturing the Golden Gate Bridge's legendary beams, the Rockefeller Plaza skeleton and armor plates for countless American warships. "Where better to showcase this history than where it happened?" said museum director Rusty Baker, speaking of the museum's poignant locale, adding "It really puts it into context." http://host...

This is clipped from the film, Waters of the Commonwealth, was prepared by the Pennsylvania Sanitary Water Board in 1951 to carry the story of water pollution control directly to the general public. The film was done during the term of Pennsylvania Governor James Duff who initiated programs to clean up polluted streams, including the highly industrialized Schuylkill River near Philadelphia, which became a model for other polluted rivers around the country. He also tightened anti-pollution laws for mining companies, despite their strong opposition from mining special interests. As Pennsylvania's population increased and its industry developed in latter nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, pollution of the state's waters increased. In 1905 the first water pollution control legislatio...

Transport in Philadelphia - Pennsylvania World Travel https://www.youtube.com/user/World1Tube Philadelphia - Pennsylvania Travel Guide http://goo.gl/gB5fmj Public transport: We have William Penn's original grid street design to thank for Philadelphia's easy navigation. It spans just 25 blocks between two rivers -- the Schuylkill and the Delaware. In between, the north/south streets are numbered and the east/west streets have tree names. Each neighbourhood is clearly signposted and colour coded. Using public transport is however, just as easy - the subway system, street cars and buses provide a clean and reliable service. On May 30, 1889 the South Fork Dam, which maintained a pleasure lake for wealthy Pittsburgh industrialists and their families, failed due to very heavy rains and poor maintenance by the dam's owners. The burst dam sent a wall of water and debris, 40 feet high and half a mile wide, 14 miles downstream to the bustling industrial city of Johnstown, Pennsylvania. More than 2000 people lost their lives in the disaster. This documentary tells the story, and tells us that the disaster was easily avoidable. Using archival film and photographs, this film recreates the history of the Johnstown flood which killed 2,200 people in 1889. From the development of the South Fork Hunting & Fishing Club on Lake Conemaugh to the assessment of the dam by members of the club and a concerned citizen of Johnstow...

Thursday, Jan 18, 2017: President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit Allegheny County near Pittsburgh on Thursday, and he said he will support the Republican candidate for a vacant House seat while he's in town. Trump tweeted, "Will be going to Pennsylvania today in order to give my total support to RICK SACCONE, running for Congress in a Special Election (March 13). Rick is a great guy. We need more Republicans to continue our already successful agenda!" The White House later corrected Trump's tweet, saying that the president's visit was an official event to promote his agenda, and not to campaign for Saccone. A campaign event would require that taxpayers be reimbursed for some of the expenses. Trump will visit H&K Equipment, an industrial equipment company in North Fayette Township. ...
